II. Establishments of Mindfulness

63 (1) The Training

Bhikkhus, there are these 5 setbacks in the training. What 5?

(1) The destruction of life,
(2) taking what is not given,
(3) sexual misconduct,
(4) false speech, and
(5) [indulging in] liquor, wine, and intoxicants, the basis for heedlessness.

- These are the 5 setbacks in the training.

The 4 establishments of mindfulness are to be developed for abandoning these 5 setbacks in the training.

What 4? Here,

(6) a Bhikkhu dwells contemplating the body in the body, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed longing and dejection in regard to the world.

(7) He dwells contemplating feelings in feelings ...
(8) ... mind in mind ...

(9) ... phenomena in phenomena, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed longing and dejection in regard to the world.

- These 4 establishments of mindfulness are to be developed for abandoning these 5 setbacks in the training.

64 (2) Hindrances

Bhikkhus, there are these 5 hindrances. What 5?

1) The hindrance of sensual desire,
2) the hindrance of ill will,
3) the hindrance of dullness and drowsiness,
4) the hindrance of restlessness and remorse, and
5) the hindrance of doubt.

- These are the 5 hindrances... .

- These 4 establishments of mindfulness are to be developed for abandoning these 5 hindrances.

65 (3) Sensual Pleasure

Bhikkhus, there are these 5 objects of sensual pleasure. What 5?

1) Forms cognizable by the eye that are wished for, desired, agreeable, pleasing, connected with sensual pleasure, tantalizing;

2) sounds cognizable by the ear ...
3) odours cognizable by the nose ...
4) tastes cognizable by the tongue ...

5) tactile objects cognizable by the body that are wished for, desired, agreeable, pleasing, connected with sensual pleasure, tantalizing.

- These are the 5 objects of sensual pleasure... .

- These 4 establishments of mindfulness are to be developed for abandoning these 5 objects of sensual pleasure.

66 (4) Aggregates

Bhikkhus, there are these 5 aggregates subject to clinging. What 5?

1) The form aggregate subject to clinging,
2) the feeling aggregate subject to clinging,
3) the perception aggregate subject to clinging,
4) the volitional activities aggregate subject to clinging, and
5) the consciousness aggregate subject to clinging.  

- These are the 5 aggregates subject to clinging... .

- These 4 establishments of mindfulness are to be developed for abandoning these 5 aggregates subject to clinging.

67 (5) Lower Fetters

Bhikkhus, there are these 5 lower fetters. What 5?

1) Personal-existence view,
2) doubt,
3) wrong grasp of behaviour and observances,
4) sensual desire, and
5) ill will.

- These are the 5 lower fetters... .

- These 4 establishments of mindfulness are to be developed for abandoning these 5 lower fetters.

68 (6) Destinations

Bhikkhus, there are these 5 destinations. What 5?

1) Hell,
2) the animal realm,
3) the sphere of afflicted spirits,
4) human beings, and
5) devas.

- These are the 5 destinations... .

- These 4 establishments of mindfulness are to be developed for abandoning these 5 destinations.

69 (7) Miserliness

Bhikkhus, there are these 5 kinds of miserliness. What 5?

1) Miserliness with regard to dwellings,
2) miserliness with regard to families,
3) miserliness with regard to gains,
4) miserliness with regard to praise, and
5) miserliness with regard to the Dhamma.

- These are the 5 kinds of miserliness... .

- These 4 establishments of mindfulness are to be developed for abandoning these 5 kinds of miserliness.

70 (8) Higher Fetters

Bhikkhus, there are these 5 higher fetters. What 5?

1) Lust for form,
2) lust for the formless,
3) conceit,
4) restlessness, and
5) ignorance.

- These are the 5 higher fetters... .

- These 4 establishments of mindfulness are to be developed for abandoning these 5 higher fetters.

71 (9) Mental Barrenness

Bhikkhus, there are these 5 kinds of mental barrenness. What 5?

(1) Here, a Bhikkhu is perplexed about the Teacher, doubts him, is not convinced about him and does not place confidence in him.

When a Bhikkhu is perplexed about the Teacher, doubts him, is not convinced about him and does not place confidence in him, his mind does not incline to ardour, effort, perseverance, and striving.

Since his mind does not incline to ardour ... and striving, this is the 1st kind of mental barrenness.

 (2)(5) Again, a Bhikkhu is perplexed about the Dhamma ... perplexed about the Saṅgha ... perplexed about the training ... is irritated by his fellow monks, displeased with them, aggressive toward them, ill disposed toward them.

When a Bhikkhu is irritated by his fellow monks, displeased with them, aggressive toward them, ill disposed toward them, his mind does not incline to ardour, effort, perseverance, and striving.

Since his mind does not incline to ardour ... and striving, this is the 5th kind of mental barrenness.

These are the 5 kinds of mental barrenness... .

These 4 establishments of mindfulness are to be developed for abandoning these 5 kinds of mental barrenness.

72 (10) Bondage

Bhikkhus, there are these 5 bondages of the mind. What 5?

(1) Here, a Bhikkhu is not devoid of lust for sensual pleasures, not devoid of desire, affection, thirst, passion, and craving for them.

When a Bhikkhu is not devoid of lust for sensual pleasures, not devoid of desire, affection, thirst, passion, and craving for them, his mind does not incline to ardour, effort, perseverance, and striving.

Since his mind does not incline to ardour ... and striving, this is the 1st bondage of the mind.

(2)(5) Again, a Bhikkhu is not devoid of lust for the body, not devoid of desire, affection, thirst, passion, and craving for it... .

He is not devoid of lust for form, not devoid of desire, affection, thirst, passion, and craving for it... .

Having eaten as much as he wants until his belly is full, he is intent upon the pleasure of rest, the pleasure of sloth, the pleasure of sleep... .

He lives the spiritual life aspiring for [rebirth in] a certain order of devas, [thinking]:

‘By this virtuous behaviour, observance, austerity, or spiritual life I will be a deva or one [in the retinue] of the devas.’

When he lives the spiritual life aspiring for [rebirth in] a certain order of devas ... his mind does not incline to ardour, effort, perseverance, and striving.

Since his mind does not incline to ardour ... and striving, this is the 5th bondage of the mind.

These, Bhikkhus, are the 5 bondages of the mind... .

These 4 establishments of mindfulness are to be developed for abandoning these 5 bondages of the mind.
