II. One Who Insults

211 (1) One Who Insults

Bhikkhus, when a Bhikkhu is one who insults and disparages his fellow monks, a reviler of the noble ones, 5 dangers can be expected for him. What 5?

1) He either commits a pārājika and cuts off the outlet, or
2) commits a certain defiled offense, or
3) contracts a severe illness.
4) He dies confused.

5) With the breakup of the body, after death, he is reborn in the plane of misery, in a bad destination, in the lower world, in hell.

- When a Bhikkhu is one who insults and disparages his fellow monks, a reviler of the noble ones, these 5 dangers can be expected for him.

212 (2) Arguments

Bhikkhus, when a Bhikkhu is a maker of arguments, quarrels, disputes, contentious talk, and disciplinary issues in the Saṅgha, 5 dangers can be expected for him. What 5?

1) He does not achieve what he has not yet achieved;
2) he falls away from what he has achieved;
3) a bad report circulates about him;
4) he dies confused; and

5) with the breakup of the body, after death, he is reborn in the plane of misery, in a bad destination, in the lower world, in hell.

When a Bhikkhu is a maker of arguments, quarrels, disputes, contentious talk, and disciplinary issues in the Saṅgha, these 5 dangers can be expected for him.

213 (3) Virtuous Behaviour

Bhikkhus, there are these 5 dangers for an immoral person because of his deficiency in virtuous behaviour. What 5?

1) Here, an immoral person deficient in virtuous behaviour loses much wealth because of heedlessness.

This is the 1st danger for an immoral person because of his deficiency in virtuous behaviour.

(2) Again, a bad report circulates about an immoral person deficient in virtuous behaviour.

This is the 2nd danger... .

(3) Again, whatever assembly an immoral person deficient in virtuous behaviour approaches—whether of Khattiyas, Brahmins, householders, or ascetics

- he approaches it timid and disconcerted.

This is 3rd danger... .  

4) Again, an immoral person deficient in virtuous behaviour dies confused.

This is the 4th danger... .

5) Again, with the breakup of the body, after death, an immoral person deficient in virtuous behaviour is reborn in the plane of misery, in a bad destination, in the lower world, in hell.

This is the 5th danger... .

These are the 5 dangers for an immoral person because of his deficiency in virtuous behaviour.

Bhikkhus, there are these 5 benefits for a virtuous person because of his accomplishment in virtuous behaviour. What 5?

1) Here, a virtuous person accomplished in virtuous behaviour accumulates much wealth because of heedfulness.

This is the 1st benefit for a virtuous person because of his accomplishment in virtuous behaviour.

2) Again, a virtuous person accomplished in virtuous behaviour acquires a good reputation. This is the 2nd benefit... .

3) Again, whatever assembly a virtuous person accomplished in virtuous behaviour approaches—whether of Khattiyas, Brahmins, householders, or ascetics—he approaches it confidently and composed.

This is the 3rd benefit... .

4) Again, a virtuous person accomplished in virtuous behaviour dies unconfused.

This is the 4th benefit... .

5) Again, with the breakup of the body, after death, a virtuous person accomplished in virtuous behaviour is reborn in a good destination, in a heavenly world.

This is the 5th benefit... .  

These are the 5 benefits for a virtuous person because of his accomplishment in virtuous behaviour.

214 (4) Speaking Much

Bhikkhus, there are these 5 dangers for a person who speaks much. What 5?

1) He speaks falsely;
2) he speaks divisively;
3) he speaks harshly;
4) he speaks idle chatter;
5) with the breakup of the body, after death, he is reborn in the plane of misery, in a bad destination, in the lower world, in hell.

- These are the 5 dangers for a person who speaks much.

Bhikkhus, there are these 5 benefits for a person of judicious speech. What 5?

1) He does not speak falsely;
2) he does not speak divisively;
3) he does not speak harshly;
4) he does not speak idle chatter;
5) with the breakup of the body, after death, he is reborn in a good destination, in a heavenly world.

- These are the 5 benefits for a person of judicious speech.

215 (5) Impatience (1)

Bhikkhus, there are these 5 dangers in impatience. What 5?

1) One is displeasing and disagreeable to many people;
2) one has an abundance of enmity;
3) one has an abundance of faults;
4) one dies confused;
5) with the breakup of the body, after death, one is reborn in the plane of misery, in a bad destination, in the lower world, in hell.

- These are the 5 dangers in impatience.

Bhikkhus, there are these 5 benefits in patience. What 5?

1) One is pleasing and agreeable to many people;
2) one does not have an abundance of enmity;
3) one does not have an abundance of faults;
4) one dies unconfused;
5) with the breakup of the body, after death, one is reborn in a good destination, in a heavenly world.

- These are the 5 benefits in patience.

216 (6) Impatience (2)

Bhikkhus, there are these 5 dangers in impatience. What 5?

1) One is displeasing and disagreeable to many people;
2) one is violent;
3) one is remorseful;
4) one dies confused;
5) with the breakup of the body, after death, one is reborn in the plane of misery, in a bad destination, in the lower world, in hell.

- These are the 5 dangers in impatience.

Bhikkhus, there are these 5 benefits in patience. What 5?

1) One is pleasing and agreeable to many people;
2) one is not violent;
3) one is without remorse;
4) one dies unconfused;
5) with the breakup of the body, after death, one is reborn in a good destination, in a heavenly world.

- These are the 5 benefits in patience.

217 (7) Not Inspiring Confidence (1)

Bhikkhus, there are these 5 dangers in conduct that does not inspire confidence.

What 5?

1) One blames oneself;
2) the wise, having investigated, censure one;
3) one acquires a bad reputation;
4) one dies confused;
5) with the breakup of the body, after death, one is reborn in the plane of misery, in a bad destination, in the lower world, in hell.

- These are the 5 dangers in conduct that does not inspire confidence.

 Bhikkhus, there are these 5 benefits in conduct that inspires confidence. What 5?

1) One does not blame oneself;
2) the wise, having investigated, praise one;
3) one acquires a good reputation;
4) one dies unconfused;
5) with the breakup of the body, after death, one is reborn in a good destination, in a heavenly world.

- These are the 5 benefits in conduct that inspires confidence.

218 (8) Not Inspiring Confidence (2)

Bhikkhus, there are these 5 dangers in conduct that does not inspire confidence. What 5?

1) Those without confidence do not gain confidence;
2) some of those with confidence change their minds;
3) the teaching of the Teacher is not carried out;
4) [those in] the next generation follow one’s example; and
5) one’s own mind does not become placid.

- These are the 5 dangers in conduct that does not inspire confidence.

Bhikkhus, there are these 5 benefits in conduct that inspires confidence. What 5?

1) Those without confidence gain confidence;
2) those with confidence increase [in their confidence];
3) the teaching of the Teacher is carried out;
4) [those in] the next generation follow one’s example; and
5) one’s own mind becomes placid.

- These are the 5 benefits in conduct that inspires confidence.

219 (9) Fire

Bhikkhus, there are these 5 dangers in fire. What 5?

1) It is not good for the eyes;
2) it causes a bad complexion;
3) it causes weakness;
4) it promotes fondness of company; and
5) it conduces to pointless talk.

- These are the 5 dangers in fire.

220 (10) Madhurā

Bhikkhus, there are these 5 dangers in Madhurā. What 5?

1) It is uneven;
2) it is dusty;
3) its dogs are fierce;
4) it has wild spirits; and
5) it is difficult to gain alms-food there.

- These are the 5 dangers in Madhurā.
