Healing Mantras in Tibetan Buddhism

In my previous article about the basics of Tibetan medicine I already explained how it is closely related with Buddhism, right livelihood and religious principles. Often it may appear difficult to maintain all external conditions, like appropriate ingredients for a healing food or some others. But the good news is – as long we are alive in this life and body, we have our mind with us. And its essence is our ever present, indestructible and perfect Buddha nature. If we could harness even a tiny bit of its power, we could release ourselves from many physical and mental diseases.

As a tool to connect our conditioned and imperfect state of mind with the highest wisdom of our absolute Buddha nature we use mantras. And there are many more specific mantras for special situations in our lives and many are used in Tibetan medicine. Many of them are given by Medicine Buddha Sangye Menla.

If you decide to use them – please remember – your health is your own responsibility. If you have a disease, it’s always good to visit a doctor. Mantras can serve as an additional aid or on some occasions strengthen efficiency of general medicine. Observe your mind and feelings, if you feel some unwelcome feelings, quit mantra and take a rest.

Don’t mix. Remember – these are Buddhist mantras. They work through a certain set of subtle energy channels in the body. You may stumble somewhere upon Hinduist mantras or Ayurvedic mantras, while they might do some good effect to some people in certain conditions, though they use a different set of subtle energy channels and it might be very dangerous to mix them. In Buddhist tantra the main energy channel go through the very centre of the body, straight down from the crown chakra (4 ½ finger width from the place where scalp begins) and use 5 chakras, while hinduist tantra is using the energy channel in the spine and using 7 chakras.
