XVI. Floods
At Sāvatthī.
171 (1) Floods
Bhikkhus, there are these 4 floods. What 4?
1) The flood of sensuality,
2) the flood of existence,
3) the flood of views,
4) the flood of ignorance.
- These are the 4 floods.
This Noble Eightfold Path is to be developed for direct knowledge of these 4 floods, for the full understanding of them, for their utter destruction, for their abandoning.
172 (2) Bonds
Bhikkhus, there are these 4 bonds. What 4?
1) The bond of sensuality,
2) the bond of existence,
3) the bond of views,
4) the bond of ignorance.
- These are the 4 bonds.

173 (3) Clinging
Bhikkhus, there are these 4 kinds of clinging? What 4?
1) Clinging to sensual pleasure,
2) clinging to views,
3) clinging to rules and vows,
4) clinging to a doctrine of self.
- These are the 4 kinds of clinging.

174 (4) Knots
Bhikkhus, there are these 4 knots. What 4?
1) The bodily knot of covetousness,
2) the bodily knot of ill will,
3) the bodily knot of distorted grasp of rules and vows,
4) the bodily knot of adherence to dogmatic assertion of truth.
- These are the 4 knots.

175 (5) Underlying Tendencies
Bhikkhus, there are these 7 underlying tendencies. What 7?
1) The underlying tendency to sensual lust,
2) the underlying tendency to aversion,
3) the underlying tendency to views,
4) the underlying tendency to doubt,
5) the underlying tendency to conceit,
6) the underlying tendency to lust for existence,
7) the underlying tendency to ignorance.
- These are the 7 underlying tendencies.

176 (6) Cords of Sensual Pleasure
Bhikkhus, there are these 5 cords of sensual pleasure. What 5?
1) Forms cognizable by the eye that are desirable, lovely, agreeable, pleasing, sensually enticing, tantalizing.
2) Sounds cognizable by the ear …
3) Odours cognizable by the nose …
4) Tastes cognizable by the tongue …
5) Tactile objects cognizable by the body that are desirable, lovely, agreeable, pleasing, sensually enticing, tantalizing.
- These are the 5 cords of sensual pleasure.

177 (7) Hindrances
Bhikkhus, there are these 5 hindrances. What 5?
1) The hindrance of sensual desire,

3) the hindrance of sloth and torpor,
4) the hindrance of restlessness and remorse,
5) the hindrance of doubt.
- These are the 5 hindrances.

178 (8) Aggregates Subject to Clinging
Bhikkhus, there are these 5 aggregates subject to clinging. What 5?
1) The form aggregate subject to clinging,
2) the feeling aggregate subject to clinging,
3) the perception aggregate subject to clinging,
4) the volitional formations aggregate subject to clinging,
5) the consciousness aggregate subject to clinging.
- These are the 5 aggregates subject to clinging.

179 (9) Lower Fetters
Bhikkhus, there are these 5 lower fetters. What 5?
1) Identity view,
2) doubt,
3) the distorted grasp of rules and vows,
4) sensual desire,
5) ill will.
- These are the 5 lower fetters.

180 (10) Higher Fetters
Bhikkhus, there are these 5 higher fetters. What 5?
1) Lust for form,

4) restlessness,
5) ignorance.

Here, Bhikkhus, a Bhikkhu develops right view … right concentration, which is based upon seclusion, dispassion, and cessation, maturing in release.

which has the Deathless as its ground, the Deathless as its destination, the Deathless as its final goal … which slants, slopes, and inclines towards Nibbāna.
