III. Good Conduct

221 (1) Misconduct

Bhikkhus, there are these 4 kinds of verbal misconduct. What 4?

1) False speech,
2) divisive speech,
3) harsh speech, and
4) idle chatter.

- These are the 4 kinds of verbal misconduct.

Bhikkhus, there are these 4 kinds of verbal good conduct. What 4?

1) Truthful speech,
2) non-divisive speech,
3) gentle speech, and
4) judicious speech.

- These are the 4 kinds of verbal good conduct.

222 (2) View

Bhikkhus, possessing 4 qualities,

the foolish, incompetent, bad person maintains himself in a maimed and injured condition; he is blameworthy and subject to reproach by the wise; and he generates much demerit.

What 4?

1) Bodily misconduct,
2) verbal misconduct,
3) mental misconduct, and
4) wrong view.

- Possessing these 4 qualities ... he generates much demerit.

Bhikkhus, possessing 4 [other] qualities,

the wise, competent, good person preserves himself unmaimed and uninjured; he is blameless and beyond reproach by the wise; and he generates much merit.

What 4?

1) Bodily good conduct,
2) verbal good conduct,
3) mental good conduct, and
4) right view.

- Possessing these 4 qualities ... he generates much merit.

223 (3) Ingratitude

Bhikkhus, possessing 4 qualities,

the foolish, incompetent, bad person maintains himself in a maimed and injured condition; he is blameworthy and subject to reproach by the wise; and he generates much demerit.

What 4?

1) Bodily misconduct,
2) verbal misconduct,
3) mental misconduct, and
4) ingratitude or non-thankfulness.

- Possessing these 4 qualities ... he generates much demerit.

Bhikkhus, possessing 4 [other] qualities,

the wise, competent, good person preserves himself unmaimed and uninjured; he is blameless and beyond reproach by the wise; and he generates much merit.

What 4?

1) Bodily good conduct,
2) verbal good conduct,
3) mental good conduct, and
4) gratitude or thankfulness.

- Possessing these 4 qualities ... he generates much merit.

224 (4) Destruction of Life

1) ... He destroys life,
2) takes what is not given,
3) engages in sexual misconduct, and
4) speaks falsely... .

1) ... He abstains from the destruction of life,
2) abstains from taking what is not given,
3) abstains from sexual misconduct, and
4) abstains from false speech... .

225 (5) Path (1)

1) ... He is of wrong view,
2) wrong intention,
3) wrong speech, and
4) wrong action... .

1) ... He is of right view,
2) right intention,
3) right speech, and
4) right action... .

226 (6) Path (2)

1) ... He is of wrong livelihood,
2) wrong effort,
3) wrong mindfulness, and
4) wrong concentration... .

1) ... He is of right livelihood,
2) right effort,
3) right mindfulness, and
4) right concentration... .

227 (7) Courses of Expression (1)

1) ... He says that he has seen what he has not seen;
2) he says that he has heard what he has not heard;
3) he says that he has sensed what he has not sensed;
4) he says that he has cognized what he has not cognized... .

1) ... He says that he has not seen what he has not seen;
2) he says that he has not heard what he has not heard;
3) he says that he has not sensed what he has not sensed;
4) he says that he has not cognized what he has not cognized... .

228 (8) Courses of Expression (2)

1) ... He says that he has not seen what he has seen;
2) he says that he has not heard what he has heard;
3) he says that he has not sensed what he has sensed;
4) he says that he has not cognized what he has cognized... .

1) ... He says that he has seen what he has seen;
2) he says that he has heard what he has heard;
3) he says that he has sensed what he has sensed;
4) he says that he has cognized what he has cognized... .

229 (9) Morally Shameless

1) ... He is devoid of faith,
2) immoral,
3) morally shameless, and
4) morally reckless... .

1) ... He is endowed with faith,
2) virtuous, and
3) has a sense of moral shame and
4) moral dread... .

230 (10) Unwise

Bhikkhus, possessing 4 qualities,

the foolish, incompetent, bad person maintains himself in a maimed and injured condition; he is blameworthy and subject to reproach by the wise; and he generates much demerit.

What 4?

1) He is devoid of faith,
2) immoral,
3) lazy, and
4) unwise.

- Possessing these 4 qualities ... he generates much demerit.

Bhikkhus, possessing 4 [other] qualities,

the wise, competent, good person preserves himself unmaimed and uninjured; he is blameless and beyond reproach by the wise; and he generates much merit.

What 4?

1) He is endowed with faith,
2) is virtuous,
3) energetic, and
4) wise.

- Possessing these 4 qualities ... he generates much merit.

231 (11) Poets

Bhikkhus, there are these 4 kinds of poets. What 4?

1) The reflective poet,
2) the narrative poet,
3) the didactic poet, and
4) the inspirational poet.

- These are the 4 kinds of poets.
