I. Full Ordination
251 (1) Who May Give Full Ordination
Bhikkhus, possessing 5 qualities, a Bhikkhu may give full ordination. What 5?
1) Here, a Bhikkhu possesses the aggregate of virtuous behaviour of one beyond training;
2) he possesses the aggregate of concentration of one beyond training;
3) he possesses the aggregate of wisdom of one beyond training;
4) he possesses the aggregate of liberation of one beyond training;
5) he possesses the aggregate of the knowledge and vision of liberation of one beyond training.
- Possessing these 5 qualities, a Bhikkhu may give full ordination.
252 (2) Dependence
Bhikkhus, possessing 5 qualities, a Bhikkhu may give dependence. What 5?
Here, a Bhikkhu possesses …
1) the aggregate of virtuous behaviour ...
2) the aggregate of concentration ...
3) the aggregate of wisdom ...
4) the aggregate of liberation ...
5) the aggregate of the knowledge and vision of liberation of one beyond training.
- Possessing these 5 qualities, a Bhikkhu may give dependence.
253 (3) Novice
Bhikkhus, possessing 5 qualities, a Bhikkhu may be attended upon by a novice.
What 5?
Here, a Bhikkhu possesses …
1) the aggregate of virtuous behaviour ...
2) the aggregate of concentration ...
3) the aggregate of wisdom ...
4) the aggregate of liberation ...
5) the aggregate of the knowledge and vision of liberation of one beyond training.
- Possessing these 5 qualities, a Bhikkhu may be attended upon by a novice.
254 (4) Miserliness
Bhikkhus, there are these 5 kinds of miserliness. What 5?
1) Miserliness with regard to dwellings,
2) miserliness with regard to families,
3) miserliness with regard to gains,
4) miserliness with regard to praise, and
5) miserliness with regard to the Dhamma.
- These are the 5 kinds of miserliness. Of these 5 kinds of miserliness, the vilest is miserliness with regard to the Dhamma.
255 (5) Abandoning Miserliness
Bhikkhus, the spiritual life is lived for the abandoning and eradication of 5 kinds of miserliness. What 5?
1) Miserliness with regard to dwellings,
2) miserliness with regard to families,
3) miserliness with regard to gains,
4) miserliness with regard to praise, and
5) miserliness with regard to the Dhamma.
- The spiritual life is lived for the abandoning and eradication of these 5 kinds of miserliness.
256 (6) First Jhāna
Bhikkhus, without having abandoned these 5 things one is incapable of entering and dwelling in the 1st jhāna. What 5?
1) Miserliness with regard to dwellings,
2) miserliness with regard to families,
3) miserliness with regard to gains,
4) miserliness with regard to praise, and
5) miserliness with regard to the Dhamma.
- Without having abandoned these 5 things, one is incapable of entering and dwelling in the 1st jhāna.
Bhikkhus, having abandoned these 5 things, one is capable of entering and dwelling in the first jhāna. What 5?
1) Miserliness with regard to dwellings,
2) miserliness with regard to families,
3) miserliness with regard to gains,
4) miserliness with regard to praise, and
5) miserliness with regard to the Dhamma.
- Having abandoned these 5 things, one is capable of entering and dwelling in the 1st jhāna.
257 (7)–263 (13) Second Jhāna, Etc.
Bhikkhus, without having abandoned these 5 things
one is incapable of entering and dwelling in the 2nd jhāna ... the 3rd jhāna ... the 4th jhāna ...
one is incapable of realizing the fruit of stream-entry ... the fruit of once-returning ... the fruit of non-returning ... the fruit of Arahantship.
What 5?
1) Miserliness with regard to dwellings,
2) miserliness with regard to families,
3) miserliness with regard to gains,
4) miserliness with regard to praise, and
5) miserliness with regard to the Dhamma.
Without having abandoned these 5 things, one is incapable of realizing the fruit of Arahantship.
Bhikkhus, having abandoned these 5 things,
one is capable of entering and dwelling in the 2nd jhāna ... the 3rd jhāna ... the 4th jhāna ...
one is capable of realizing the fruit of stream-entry ... the fruit of once-returning ... the fruit of non-returning ... the fruit of Arahantship.
What 5?
1) Miserliness with regard to dwellings,
2) miserliness with regard to families,
3) miserliness with regard to gains,
4) miserliness with regard to praise, and
5) miserliness with regard to the Dhamma.
- Having abandoned these 5 things, one is capable of realizing the fruit of Arahantship.
264 (14) Another on the First Jhāna
Bhikkhus, without having abandoned these 5 things one is incapable of entering and dwelling in the first jhāna. What 5?
1) Miserliness with regard to dwellings,
2) miserliness with regard to families,
3) miserliness with regard to gains,
4) miserliness with regard to praise, and
5) ingratitude or unthankfulness.
- Without having abandoned these 5 things, one is incapable of entering and dwelling in the 1st jhāna.
Bhikkhus, having abandoned these 5 things, one is capable of entering and dwelling in the 1st jhāna. What 5?
1) Miserliness with regard to dwellings,
2) miserliness with regard to families,
3) miserliness with regard to gains,
4) miserliness with regard to praise, and
5) ingratitude or unthankfulness.
- Having abandoned these 5 things, one is capable of entering and dwelling in the 1st jhāna.

Bhikkhus, without having abandoned these 5 things
one is incapable of entering and dwelling in the 2nd jhāna ... the 3rd jhāna ... the 4th jhāna ...
